How I like to work
I consider myself primarily a cognitive therapist, utilizing cognitive-behavioral and rational-emotive-behavioral therapies, as these are methods of psychotherapy that have strong evidence of working well for most people. I believe a lot of our emotional problems originate with faulty thinking, or what psychologists call cognitive distortions. Working together, we would examine your automatic thoughts, consider any evidence as to their veracity, and replace those that aren’t working in your best interest with beliefs that serve you better. In this way, we can elevate your mood and reduce your anxiety, as well as to develop behavioral strategies and figure out what life alternatives lie ahead for you. It’s a very collaborative process, and can be very effective.
Studies have shown that what matters most in personal psychotherapy is not the particular techniques used, but the quality of the relationship between therapist and client. If, after meeting, you decide we are not a good “fit,” you should feel free to find an alternative counselor who may help you more. Otherwise, we can have great success!
My professional background
I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who has been counseling since I was a paraprofessional counselor at the San Fernando Valley Counseling Center in 1991. I received my M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Phillips Graduate Institute (then called California Family Study Center) in 1994, and worked for ten years as a Children’s Social Worker for the Department of Children and Family Services of Los Angeles County, doing in-depth interviews of families and writing psycho-social reports for Juvenile Court as well as providing case management services. I received my MFT license in 1999 and began a private practice.
I returned to school to get my doctorate in Clinical Psychology from PGI in 2007, and during that time worked at Glendale Memorial Hospital, facilitating group psychoeducational sessions in anger management, grief and loss, and codependency issues for patients in general psychiatric care, geriatric psych, and Alternatives, an LGBT dual-diagnoses population. I also did a part-time internship at Pasadena City College, where I counseled students and did presentations on relationship issues for adult groups. I completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Reiss-Davis Child Study Center in Culver City, providing psychological and educational assessment services, including doing intakes, testing, scoring, interpreting, writing reports, and leading feedback sessions. I became licensed as a clinical psychologist in 2011, and worked as an Assessment Psychologist at Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services in Los Angeles, doing psychoeducational testing of children.
I continued my private practice work in Burbank and throughout the Los Angeles area, counseling individuals of all ages. In the spring of 2018, I moved my practice to Thousand Oaks, California, where I continue counseling others. I also teach psychology classes at the Chicago School for Professional Psychology, Phillips Graduate Institute and for the University of Phoenix in Southern California.
